What is your organization’s target area?
Schools, businesses, and the community.
How is your organization making a difference in Detroit today?
We are hosting educational workshops around the city to educate residents about recycling. Through the workshop they learn the importance of diverting our waste and knowing what can and cannot go in the recycling cart as well as what shouldn’t be going in our trash.
We work with students in Detroit Public Schools teaching them the importance of conserving our natural resources through all school assemblies and Pre-k/K and 3rd grade lessons. Now students will have the opportunity to take their learning about these important concepts home with them and teach their families.
Businesses and Apartment buildings throughout the city do not have an easy way of implementing recycling services for their operations. Through our Bee Green Business program, we are able to connect these organizations to recycling vendors and provide education to staff and tenants.
What are some of your organization’s proudest accomplishments?
We have reached over 90,000 students in Detroit Public Schools teaching them about the 3 R’s -Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
We help businesses set up recycling programs at their facilities. This year we have helped the Michigan Science Center and the DIA!
What have been your top lessons learned through your work in your community?
We learned that the community networks are stronger than any other type of marketing efforts we could do. The community wants to help each other and they are the ones that will help share and promote resources when they see that it is essential and beneficial to them.
How can others get involved/support your work?
We have residents help as Curbside Recycling Ambassadors; educating and signing up their neighbors to receive free recycling carts. Those interested can contact us and receive a training on how to be an ambassador in their community!
