What is your organization’s target area?
All of Wayne County.
How is your organization making a difference in Detroit today?
We are a community-based program that serves children through 17 years of age, providing comprehensive treatment to suspected child victims of abuse and neglect. We utilize a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to coordinate the investigation, assessment, treatment and prevention of child abuse in Detroit and throughout Wayne County.
We have held our annual Youth Poetry slam for six years, giving young people a space to share their stories. We have forensically interviewed thousands of children since we opened our doors over a decade ago and we have provided therapy to hundreds of children throughout Wayne County. Finally, we have trained thousands of parents, teachers, medical staff, law enforcement, and social workers on how to protect children from maltreatment.
What have been your top lessons learned through your work in your community?
Prevention is key to improving the lives of children; preventing abuse not only spares the child, but reduces the ripple effect that child maltreatment has on the community. We all take a part in protecting children!
What words of wisdom or encouragement would you pass on to others doing work similar to your organization?
Don’t give up hope. Focus on the things that are working well to learn how you can change the things that aren’t.
How can others get involved/support your work?
We are always looking for volunteers and donations. Learn more at http://www.kids-talkcac.org/
